A couple of years ago I was asked to speak at a seminar put on by Carrie Wilkerson, the Barefoot Executive.
I did an exercise in front of the crowd that really made an impact on everyone present.
I asked two women to come up to the front of the room.
I asked one woman to stand on one side the room and had the other woman stand on the opposite side of the room.
I blindfolded women “A” so she couldn’t see and asked her to walk to women “B.”
Woman “A” was lost. She was bumping into things. She going in all directions.
I then had woman “B” call to woman “A”, which helped her eventually make it to the other the other side of the room, but she still struggled.
I then had the two women switch places and asked woman “B” to do the same thing, BUT without the blindfold on.
Women “B” walked directly to woman “A.”
It took her just a couple of seconds.
The Big Lesson Learned
The speed of your success is directly related to how CLEAR your action plan is.
The more clear you are with your action plan, the faster you’ll be able to achieve your goals.
The reason why so many people struggle trying to reach their goals is because they are always trying to figure things out.
Or they’re always trying to build a better mousetrap.
They either don’t have an action plan OR their action plan is so unclear that they waste a lot of their time trying to get to their goal.
The bottom line is when you have a crystal clear road map of EXACTLY what you need to do to get to where you want to be, you’ll get there 10 times faster!
How to Get Clarity In Your Life
So now that you know that have a clear and precise action plan is the fastest way to success, you’re wondering how to get some of the clarity.
The answer is simple.
Find someone that is ALREADY where you want to be, that is enjoying the results that you desire, and model that person.
Here’s what I do.
Let’s say I want to model a person’s marketing system (hey, I’m a marketer).
I’ll go through that person’s entire process and then I’ll work backwards, deconstructing it step by step.
I’ll carefully document each step and take screen shots of all the webpages in the process.
That’s just one way to model someone.
5 More Ways to Model Successful People
There’s a lot of ways to model successful people.
Here’s some more ways.
1. Buy their products
If the person you want to model has products, buy their stuff and become their customers.
Not only will you learn more about their process through their products, but when you are their customer, they’ll be more likely to recognize you.
2. Join their coaching programs
Sometimes you’ll have to buy their attention.
If they have a coaching program, spend the money to be a part of it.
3. Sign up for all their communications
Most experts have an online newsletter they send out. Make sure you’re on their newsletter list.
For the experts that I’m following, I create a folder in my email inbox and put all their communications in folders to refer back to at a later date.
4. Follow them on all the social media sites.
Most likely, you’ll be able to find your expert on social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or even YouTube.com.
Make sure you follow and “friend” them on those social media sites.
Once you’re “connected” to them, start interacting with them on a frequent basis. Become friends with them online.
(You can find out a LOT about me online at http://www.Facebook.com/dfrey)
5. Study all their marketing processes
Keep a close eye on every marketing move they make and take note of what they’re doing (and not doing).
I frequently take screenshots of other experts marketing funnels and sales process so I can study and scrutinize them.
6. Get to know their friends.
You’d be surprised how much I’ve been able to discover simply by asking friends about the person I’m trying to emulate.
7. Attend their live events.
If the person you want to emulate is holding a live event, you must absolutely attend it.
Not only will you be able to understand more about how that persons operates, but you’ll have a good chance of meeting and getting to know them personally.
8. Attend events you know they’ll be attending.
If they ever mention that they are going to be attending any live events, make sure you try to be there too.
You might even ask to take them to lunch or meet up with them for a few minutes while at the event.
2 Tools You Can Use to Model Processes
There’s a lot of tools that will help you to model processes and spy on people’s websites.
Here are a two of those tools…

1. Creately.com
Creatly gives you the ability to create flow charts and maps that lay out a business process so that you can visually see each step.
2. SnagIt.com
SnagIt allows you to take a screen capture of the a webpage. I use this tool all the time to take a screenshot of a marketing process online.
It’s All About Having a Clear Vision
If you want to be the best, you should be modeling the best.
So find someone that is already successful at doing what you want to do and model what they’re doing!

Great tips as always David! I’ve done most of those, including buying programs, etc. I’d say the one area I haven’t been as rigorous is in the mapping of the process. I think that’s my next one to work on.

Tom, unique innovations are overrated. Modeling what works is “in.”
I use snagit like crazy to take screen shots of stuff I like and put them in my personal swipe files.
By the way, your “8 Facebook Fan Page Designs and Customer Tab Apps” is a great article!
Quite inspiring article, David!
In addition to having clarity, one should always keep a sharp view of the goal because the environment keeps changing. I often give an example of driving fast on the freeway to my students that If one has to keep the car in the middle of the road, the easiest way is to keep the eyes focused at the center of the road, 150 yards ahead.
But sometimes, I myself forget the advise..
… and your inspiration helps me putting myself back on track!

Hi David-
Modelling…that’s a good one! I’ve been doing it, yet I need to dig deeper, and the screen shots will really help me do that.
Thanks for the tip!
P.S.
You’ve been Pinned, Liked, Tweeted, and G+’d because this is information that everyone can use;-)

Thanks LaTonya. Yeah, I use SnagIt like crazy! I screenshot stuff ALL the time. Then I put them into Evernote (I need to include that in this article. I forgot that.) Yeah, I drop them into Evernote so that I can go find my screen shots later on.
You’ll need a good action plan and execute each step on time .Time management is the key factor to achieve all goals.I’m going to follow your method and create a clear action plan from today. Thanks David

Outstanding!
Each time I read you, David, I learn something new.
Thank you Tom! I’m blushing.
Hey David
Thanks for this insightful share. Having clarity in mind is surely the one requirement before we try to accomplish anything. It surely takes less time in directing our efforts in right direction. To model someone can really help bring clarity in actions. It gives you a set path, But one must not follow it blindly. Modifications can be made as per situation and time. Thanks for sharing these great tips.
David, I completely agree with this post. If we look at successful people like Warren buffet, Steve Jobs and many more what separated them from others is a crystal clear road map of the activities that were required to achieve what they wanted. Most of us struggle with the same and thats why we are unable to reach our potential. As you mentioned, signing up to their communication and listening to them really makes a big difference – it really open up our mind and expand our horizon and broadens our horizon…

I have several role models that I look up to, all of them are ridiculously rich, very successful yet humble. All of them have something in common, they worked hard to rise from the ranks and they made concrete plans that they were able to implement successfully. Thanks for sharing, I couldn’t agree with you more!
Thanks for summarizing these practical tips, I completely agree that in order for us to become successful, we must plan our actions precisely.
